SR22 Insurance Facts:

What is SR22 Insurance?

SR22 Insurance is actually not a policy, but simply a form that is filed as an extension of your policy by an insurance company on behalf of its insured customer. An SR22 Insurance form is filed to the required Department of Motor Vehicles and shows proof to the DMV that an insured customer is currently carrying coverage that meets the minimum requirements set by the state. This form is usually only required after an individual receives a violation for a major type of incident such as a DUI/DWI, reckless driving, driving while license is suspended or revoked, etc. An SR22 Insurance form is kept on file with the DMV for as long as your policy is in force. If an insured allows his/her policy to cancel, the insurance company would then notify the DMV of the lapse of coverage which most often results in the revocation of that person’s driver license.

How long do I need SR22 Insurance?

An SR22 Insurance filing is different from state to state. Most states require you to file an SR22 insurance form for three years. However, some states increase that penalty term to five years. In addition, some states such as Virginia and Florida even change the minimum limits of liability that you must carry as a requirement and call it an FR44. When convicted of some violations within those states, the FR44 form requirement forces the insured to carry a “double the minimum” limit of liability. Please see our FR44 Insurance page for additional information on carrying FR44 Insurance.

You could also save up to 15% on your homeowners insurance when you buy other insurance policies, like auto insurance, umbrella insurance and boat & yacht insurance.

How much does SR22 Insurance cost?

SR22 Insurance is generally more expensive than insurance that does not require the SR22 filing. It stands to reason that if you have been convicted of an incident that would require you to carry an SR22 filing that your insurance premium would be slightly higher as a result of the conviction. However, you should definitely shop around for the best premiums. Some companies take the approach that if you have ever been convicted of a major incident, then you will most likely not allow yourself to be in that situation again.

Those companies will be extremely competitive with their premiums in such cases. Other companies will take the more conservative approach and if you have a DUI/DWI, driving while license suspended or revoked, reckless driving, or other major type of incident on your driving record they will not want to offer competitive rates for three to five years from the date of the incident. Some companies will not even offer comprehensive and/or collision coverage at all when one of these types of incidents is on your driving record within three to five years, depending on their guidelines.

What is non-owners SR22 Insurance?

It is an insurance policy for a person who does not own a vehicle but still needs to have an SR22 insurance filing to the DMV in order to maintain an active license.
